First Aid in the Workplace

Originating from battlefield care for the wounded, first aid is believed to have had its beginnings in the 11th Century, when knights founded the Order of St John to specifically train other knights how to treat common injuries. First Aid is described as the immediate and temporary assistance provided to a sick or injured person until medical treatment can be provided. Nowadays First Aid, which has been advanced largely by wars, is required in the workplace.

In the 19th century, with the industrialisation of Britain, many workplaces became dangerous. Conditions and machinery were hazardous and as a result of working long hours, accidents were frequent. Many workers died or became disabled from untreated injuries. From this it was decided that First Aid was needed in the workplace.
